Social networking 10 years ago would have not meant the same as it does today. With the explosion on the Internet and the growth of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and many other sites, the term social networking mean something altogether different. In the last few months Facebook has grown to it largest number of subscribers ever at 350 million. Yes that is right 350 million which is more than the population of the US.  It was also reported that Youtube, the leader in online videos, served over 100 million videos a day in the month of January 2009 just from its US viewers. I know that it hard to believe but it is correct. 100 million videos per day.  While this growth was going on Twitter has also grown substantially but it’s grow is dwarf by that of Youtube.

To me the real news worthy item is the demographic of that growth. In 2009 for Facebook there was a 276% growth in the age group 35-54. That is not to say that there are more people 35+ on Facebook than under 35 because that is just not the case. Of the 20 million US citizens on Facebook, 18 million of them are in that 35 and under group. What it does mean is the there will be continued growth in the 35+ age group because there is so much room to grow.

What is different about Twitter is primarily users are the 35+ age group that makes up to 66% of the usage of Twitter.  Which means that Twitter has catered to this demographic as they have come online most likely for the first time.

Youtube is more balanced. About 52% of the users on Youtube are 35 and under and 48% are 35+. Youtube also has a higher demographic of males as compared to Facebook has a higher demographic of females.

As a network marketer, this means that there are going to be more and more people that are coming on line in the 35+ age group. Since the 35+ age group is also the group that has more financial resources then the under 35 group, there is going to be a further explosion of marketers that will be focused on the 35+ age group that is trying to get their hands on those financial resources. At the same time this age group is least educated on how to use a computer let alone social networking.

So what does all this growth mean to the future of Internet Network Marketing, MLM and Direct Sales. I think  this is a perfect storm for someone who can takes the right approach. A wise internet network marketer would focus on this demographic and also focus on the need for training and education of how to use social networking sites as well as other commonly used web sites. The sky can be the limit if the process is easy enough to use and for the most part can be self taught.

I was recently asked by someone new to online network marketing how long it would take them to learn all the techniques of online marketing. 20, 40 or 60 hours? How long? For those that have been doing this for a while you will probably be taken back like I was when I first heard this question. The answer is you never learn all the techniques. First, there are so many different ways to market online it will take a long time just to understand each method. Second and more important is however you do it today most likely is not the same way you will do it six months from now.

This question led me to want to write this article. Let me list some of the most popular ways to market online and then I will pick one and review some techniques of how to use that method. Some of the most popular ways to market online is to use the social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, BetterNetworker, Myspace or Youtube. Other ways to market are Pay Per Click (PPC), writing articles, Banner Ads, solo ads, email marketing and many many more. Each one of these has very specific techniques that you should follow in order to market that are unique to the web site or applications being used.

Just to understand how much detail there is to learn one technique I will pick one of the most popular ways to market which is Facebook and explain one way it can be used. Facebook is the 2nd most visited website in the world right after Google. There are hundreds of millions of people on Facebook and it is growing every day. With Facebook, after you have created your account, you want to begin to invite people to be friends that are in your target market. A good place to start is to search for groups of companies that are competitors to the one you are affiliated. Join those groups and start to invite friends. Now if you invite too many friends at one time Facebook will see you as a threat and may disable your account. A good rule of thumb is to invite 50 people at a time. More than that can get you in trouble. Continue this process every day to grow your list of friends. In a few weeks you can have almost 1000 friends as long as you are consistent and do it every day.

The next step is to get those friends to optin to your list web page so you can get them into your sales funnel. To do this you need to give your friend or prospect some value so that they want to do this. One way is to invite them to a free webinar where a subject is being taught that the prospect has an interest. For example, how to get your web site on the 1st page of Google for free. Do you think people would want to register for that? Of course they would. In no time you will have friends opting in to your web site to attend the free webinar.

The next step is to contact the new prospect and asked them how they enjoyed with free webinar that you gave them. At this point you are building a relationship with the prospect and in time some number of them will purchase something from you or join you in your primary business. This is not something that will happen over night but certainly you can see how this technique will lead to sales over time. This can be enhanced by you making comments on their status updates or on their pictures over a period of time. People like to do business with people that they like and this is when you build that relationship. In time some will attend your webinars and in time some will purchase your products or join your business. How fast it happens depends how how well you build your relationship with that prospect.

I realize that this is a high level look at this technique but I have given enough details that you can see how this can work for you. It will not happen over night but it will happen over time as you build relationships with your Facebook friends. You also should realize that I have only gone over one way to use Facebook where there are over twenty different ways to market on Facebook.

As you can see from this one example, there is so much to learn about marketing online you can appreciate that this is a very large endeavor and one that will take a long time to master. I realize that new network marketer that asked me how long it would take did not know what he was asking but when I had some time to think about his question, I realized that I have learned so much I take a lot of what I know for granted. Some questions such as this one make you look back and realize how much there is to know about this field of online network marketing.

What do you do with your optins that do not leave their phone number. If you are like most you let the autoresponder send them emails but basically you do nothing.  That is a problem because most people are surfing around the Internet they run into your site and optin but then they are off surfing again and they forget all about you. Yes, you send them emails from your autoresponder but they optin to many sites and get lots of email they do not read….So what are you going to do about that. How do you make sure they do ready your emails. Remeber of they are not reading them then you are unlikley to get any of the affiliate commitions that are marketed in those emails.

This is a common problem and one that is correctable by doing just  a few things. Go down your list of leads and look for those with no phone numbers. Take the email and search for that email in Facebook. What I have found is about 70% of the emails you will find. Send an invitation to those people with a note. The note should say something like “Hey, saw you visited by web site and wanted to connect with you. Will you be my friend” What you will find is that a good number of these people will accept the invitation. This is great. Now make sure that you do regular posts on Facebook so that they can see that you are a real person and have a real life. What will happen is these people will start reading your autoresponder emails and you will increase you affiliate commissions as they get to know you and trust you more.

That brings up another point. How do you know if they are reading your emails if you are only using the standard emails that MLSP offers. That is a good question. What you want to do is add additional emails in the autoresponder that are HTML emails which allows the tracking of the opening of the email. What I do is that I add emails that have a more personal touch to them. One example is after a week I send an email that says “Bob Here, you have been getting my emails for a week now and just wanted to make sure I was doing all I could to help you market your business on-line. If you have any questions please give me a call or shoot me an email” . This sort of short and quick emaiols you will be surprised how many people will reply to. Those emails will allow you to connect further with them. That is what it is all about guys…connecting. So if you are not doing this then start.
