MLM Training – Why Is It Needed?

by Bob on February 5, 2010

MLM means Multi-Level Marketing. It has many other names like Network marketing, direct selling, referral marketing and pyramid selling. MLM is a marketing strategy used by some companies. The marketing structure creates a sales force by giving commission to promoters of the company’s products, for the sales they generate and sales of other promoters they introduce to the company. This creates a down line of distributors/promoters and a hierarchy of many compensation levels in a pyramid form. The company products are marketed directly to consumers and potential business partners by relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing. I am sure you have heard of some these MLM Companies, people worldwide know about them: Avon, Oriflame, Kleeneze, Amway Global (Quixtar) etc.

MLM Success is highly dependent on marketing and how you do it. When you become distributor for a MLM company, much of your success depends on your marketing skills and techniques. Without that, you incur huge losses. Actually many new MLM marketers never actually receive marketing training. Marketing is promoting yourself or your business to the right group of people, who are looking for what you have to offer. Many network marketers are told to talk to create a list of 100 names and talk to each one of them. This is often a waste their time because the people are not interested in what they have to offer. This approach will lead to few sales and discouragement often to the point the that distributor will drop out of the business opportunity. So training is very important as guidance on how to do marketing of your business or products in a successful way.

Most MLM companies tell you that you need to train your teams but do very little to show you are teach you how to do this. They leave this up to individual distributors and since so many do not have expertise in this very few are successful. This is one of the largest contributors to why only 3% of network marketers ever make any money and even less obtain a level that allows them to do the business full time. As you can see, without good training, your business will be doomed to failure.

When you first enroll in most MLM businesses you will told by your upline that they will train you and all you have to do is follow them. The truth is, if they are indeed successful, which most of them are not, what they do is often not duplicatable to most people so the training that they offer has little or no value to you. One classic example of this is a high energy sales person that just lights up the room when they walk in. Often these people can enroll lots of distributors just from their energy but since what they do is not your style or personality, what they teach you on how to enroll people has little or no value to what you can do.

This is the brick wall that most MLM marketers face when they get in the industry. If however you are able to plug up with a team that will give you step by step instructions of how you can market and in turn teach your own team to market that would yield a different result. You have to understand that the average network marketer only stays in their business for 63 days. If you however can get a check in their had before that 63 days you have demonstrated to them that they can make money and they will stay in the business much longer. It is therefore crucial that you work with your new team members to allow them to make some money a quickly as possible to help them gain momentum on their business and to keep them in the business for the long run.

Just because your upline does not have the required training does not mean you cannot be successful. There are some third party training systems that will teach you and your team what you need to grow your business. There may be nothing wrong with the actual company or its compensation plan. That is only one ingredient but with the right training you can explode your business.

In conclusion, make sure you get yourself plugged into a team that can train you and your team how to be successful in the MLM business. This is a key ingredient to your success. • Right on Bob. If I ever hear that make your 100 list again I am running the other way.

  • bobhoward
I know what you mean. Thanks Ron
  • Your are "Right On" Bob,

Training is everything. I also think that telling people the hard core truth about the commitment required is just as important.

Too many people are not really up for the challenge,

    Hey B ob,
    THANK YOU !!

Many people have stated that you MUST have the dreaded "100 list" to succeed. This never did work .... unless they are truly sales type people. If you are not comfortable in "selling" then people have been told that they can still succeed but they are not told the pain they must go thru to get there.

Some of the third party systems are truly amazing in the level of training and marketing tools that they provide. I agree with you. Ditch the "100 list" and learn to market effectively and your business will flourish.

Great post. That's why I keep coming back.

    To Your Continued Success,
    Bill

Right On Bob, Also, All the training in the world no matter how good it is will help you build your business. It is all about how much action that you take with all the great knowledge you get.

One of the most important things that you just said was that it does not matter if your "sponsor" does not have training does not mean you can't be successful. There are unlimited resources out there that are simply mind blowing. And the resources that your team has is 2nd to none.
  • 63 days is the time people spend on average in an MLM company, huh!

People are like; show me the money and we are all looking for a leader to build with.

Bob is a talented communicator and I highly respect his valuable content online, like the post above, thanks for sharing with all of us.
  • Bob,

I agree totally. Plugging into a system with a bunch of great people to help with not only providing step by step strategies but also help you deal with the emotional transition from employee to business owner.

Even though I can obtain all the training I want on the internet, have a human being to share your experience with and have them to help keep you motivated is by far the most important aspect of joining a team of successful marketers.

    Great article, keep 'em coming.

  • Hey Bob,

I have to agree with Linus...You definitely have great content for beginners just getting started in the industry as well as more season marketers like myself. ;-)

    Good stuff as usual.

  • Ah the Dreaded List of 100 as one of My teachers would say! lol
    Great post Bob :)
  • Bob,

Your posts seem to cover both ends of the spectrum - content for beginners all the way up to content for more advanced marketers. Great job with covering content for both ends of the spectrum.

This is where it's at boys and girls! ;)

Good stuff Bob. Many people have the pie in the sky look when they get home from the meeting. Then the pie in the sky look turns into that deer in the headlight look.
They start asking themselves; what was I thinking? I can’t do this; I am not as sharp as that guy. So they take the line of least resistance and talk to their neighbor or the guy at work and they are told “what makes you think that you can do this?”
Now the bubble is burst and they get discouraged then freeze in their tracts.
Training is the key and all too often new distributors will get shot down before they have the chance to succeed.
The smart ones will look for a better way and it sounds like that is what you have.
