What is the Twitter 2000 Follower Limit?

by Bob on August 3, 2009

I had a fellow networker call me the other day telling me about this issue he was having with his Twitter. He could not follow anyone on Twitter and he kept getting the message he needed to try again later. Well after 3 days he knew there was something wrong.

He had about 1700 people following him and he was following 2007 but could not any more. He had reached that magical 2k limit that Twitter sets. Twitter will not allow you to follow more than 10% more than the number of people that are following you. This limit is not enforced until you go over the 2000 follower limit.

The answer to his problem was to unfollow everyone that was not following him and then add up to about 1950 and then wait a day and do it again until you have about 1900 followers then you can go up to around 2100. You will not be able to go over 10%. Just multiply your followers by 1.1 and that is the number you will be able to go to.

As long as you stay under the 10% you will not have in issue being able to follow people.
